"I can speak with Emily sir. No telling what she might say. She could be mad at me for saying something," only getting herself nervous again. "Phoebe I'll need to find. Annie will help me, won't you Annie?" Mabel needed some support in such an intrigue. Annie nodded hesitantly.

"This weekend?" It was Friday already. "Or do you mean the next? Certain I can do it before next," she stated more confidently. "Might we plan on a meeting say Friday a week from now? We'd need to meet in a place we'd not be seen," she suggested, reminding herself to look around the crowd and see if someone she knew might be watching the trio converse. This she did.

“You needn’t tell her that you revealed anything to me. Merely say that you are attempting to get enough girls who have been harassed by Palmer together to convince me, and promise her that what she says can be kept secret.” William ventured to help Mable a bit. When she looked around to see if anyone was watching, William thought that made her look more suspicious, but as she pleased. “Friday is perfectly acceptable. As to a private meeting place, I suspect you would know the nooks and crannies of the palace better than I. But I can attempt to find a place if nothing is forthcoming. All that comes to mind immediately is my office, though that is not as private as we'd like I'd think."

"Good idea sir," Mabel replied with a sigh of relief. His suggestion was welcome. "Maybe we could meet away from the palace ... like maybe a shop on the Strand, where it might look like we just bumped into you?" she suggested. "How about noon?"

"Capital idea." William grimaced at the expression shortly after using it. Did he really just say that? "Noon is fine, and you merely will have to send along the shop which we may bump into each other. Hopefully one of the bigger ones so that the owner will not be hovering over us and there will be uninhabited quarters." A bigger shop, after all, provided room for them to be lost in.

"Yes yes," Mabel agreed readily. "Let us meet in the candy store, if'n you know where that is," She looked to William to see if he might know. Did not gents visit sweet shops to find presents for the ladies they were courting? "Noon then," she repeated. "Will there be anything else sir?" If not, she was happy to be on her way.

“Very well, yes I know where the candy store is.” He thought for a moment as the conversation was ending, “No, nothing else. Good luck finding your brush.” He tipped his hat again, sensing this was drawing to a close. All that was left was to check up on the crown he had dropped and see if it was still there. He turned around and walked over to the spot where he had dropped it to do just that.

The women thanked him again and curtsied before moving away. A return to the spot where the coin had last been seen revealed its absence. Though he had not been speaking long with the two maids, someone had caught a glimpse of it and made it their own.

William looked down at the spot. So somebody had taken it. Well, there that was. He supposed it was a victory of the school of Hobbes, that people were wicked and needed to be controlled. Something to ponder later and, perhaps, after a repeat of the experiment elsewhere. His trip had been more productive than he thought, so he wasn't all that disappointed with it, despite the result of his little game. All the same, with his business otherwise concluded, he left Westminster. He had a feeling he would be back here, though.
