Backgammon, also knowns as Tables, is a popular board game for two players, who move their pieces (white/red or black) from one side of the board to the other (players moving in opposing directions) according to the rolls of a pair of dice. Despite laws passed in the time of Elizabeth I and clerical prejudice against the game, its popularity in England returned from the Continent with the Restoration. The English delight in gambling lends itself naturally to this game as not only the outcome, but the occurrence of certain dice combinations being rolled can be bet upon.
