Cavalier

The term “cavalier” derives through the Spanish from the Latin word caballarius, which means horseman. It came into use by the Parliamentarians, during the English Civil War, as a derogatory nickname for the Royalist supporters of Charles I. It was intended to convey a connection to the Spanish Catholics, and to inspire an image of an untrustworthy libertine, such as the Earl of Rochester.
