This is an Opt-In Article.
Honour is an aspect of personal character, reflecting one's honesty, integrity, and trustworthiness, that governs conduct. Honour allows one to take another at his or her word.
A code of honour also prescribes appropriate sexual behaviour for both women and men. Ladies must be chaste in order to be honourable, and the label of "whore" is usually the most damning affront one could level against a woman. Gentlemen are held responsible for the sexual conduct of women under their protection, including their wives, daughters, and sisters.
This is not the only criterion for the female, however, as a woman's honour rests partly on her skills as a housewife and mother.
A sufficient affront to a gentleman's honour can cause him to seek redress through a duel.
