Our new season is now open: Spring 1677 !

How do I win?

From AoI Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

Quite simply, you don't. In Age of Intrigue you live through your character, and submerge yourself into a whole new world. You interact, investigate, make friends and enemies. The possibilities are endless. The game is open-ended, and there is no right or wrong solution to any problem, but your actions will effect the future of those you are involved with.

What are good strategies?

First do a reality check. Is it true that you haven't seen any success? Or do you simply see others who have more? Here is a few things to keep in mind.

1) Play the Long game: Steps to Success
See Also Goal Oriented Playing

Age of Intrigue is a game designed to award gradual success through taking a small steps towards a goal. Nobody in the game enjoys instant success. If you see veteran players enjoying a moment of triumph realize that they sometimes have worked for years, and at the very least for months, on certain goals. Success is never immediate.

2) Big Risk, Big Reward
See Also IC Consequences for IC Actions

Be pro-active and dare to take risks. If you wait passively for the good things to come to you, you will be disappointed by the results. Sometimes your risk will back fire, but oh, that thrill when you win!

3) This is the 17th century, not Junior High
See Also Gender Differences

Girls especially should realize that in our setting there are things that might insult you as a woman. Such as different rules of chastity for women and men, and things that are simply not appropriate for women. We recommend you separate IC from OOC. We are not out to get you, but we will uphold the setting. This means if your girl is set to act unconventional she will pay the price of facing the brunt of proper society.

4) Moderators are your friends, talk to them
Your Player Compendium is your secret place. You can ask any question you want. We can explain the setting, or help you brainstorm how to attain your goals.

Are some players more successful than others?

The simple answer is yes.

Before you gasp and think that something is amiss, please review what may contribute to that:

  • Time - a veteran of not just one season but several, including several recesses, will have gained some if not all of his goals. Their success is translated in whatever they aimed for, but often it means that veteran characters have an advantage over relatively new characters in some areas. Their lives however are not easy, and more often than not the dangers they face are the greater.
  • Posting a lot - those players that enter or create a lot of threads, and keep up with a fast posting rate (some manage to do so nearly every day, with even some hyperposting in weekends) get out more actions in one season. Elbow grease.
  • Making use of all opportunities - moderators will offer your character subtle hints for a plot, opportunities your character can use. Of course it is up to you to pursue them or not. You can even create new opportunities by taking the initiative.
  • Not taking no for an answer - Does a twist of a tale seem to block your goals? Are NPC's in your way? Find a way around them, or plot your revenge. There seldom is one single path to an end, and often you have to find the twists and turns that work.

What to do after initial Success?

The problem with success is that once you have attained it, what more do you aim for? For instance, if you become married, wealthy and high-ranking the motivation to play may well fall because you have little tangible to actually achieve, unless you want to make more money, or bed more partners. In fact such ennui was a common problem for nobles of the time, which is one of the contributory factors to the hedonism - they were bored and had nothing else to do. Some people threw themselves into work, others into sport and others into pleasure.

We have created some Top Tips for the Middle Game to help you along when you hit that lull.
