John is a gentle affable man, who holds to great honour. He is less loud than some of the rakes around court. He, like so many others at court, writes poetry and is considered one of the more tender voices.

A man of military/naval acumen, Sir John Sheffield succeeded to the title of 3rd Earl of Mulgrave on 24 August 1658. He fought in the Battle of Solebay in 1672, in the defeat the Dutch. He gained the rank of Captain in 1673 in the service of the Royal Navy. Made Knight of the Garter in 1674
