Letters Patent

A letters patent is a type of legal document in the form of an open letter, issued by a monarch or government, granting an office, right, monopoly, title, or special status to a person or entity, such as a corporation. The King may choose to elevate someone to a barony by this means, as opposed to using the older form of creation by writ.
