The distinctive features of the violin are its "hourglass" shape, and the arching of its top and back. The most common way to play a violin is with a bow. It has four strings, and is the smallest and highest-pitched member of the violin family (which includes the viola and cello).
The most renown familes of violin makers (luthiers) from the continent are:
- Amati family of Italian violin makers - Nicolo Amati (1596-1684), Hieronymus Amati II (1649-1740)
- Guarneri family of Italian violin makers - Andrea Guarneri (1626-1698), Pietro of Mantua (1655-1720)
- Stradivari family (1644-1737) of Cremona
