Background

Amelia Wilmington, daughter of Baron Wilmington was foolish enough to have fallen completely and madly in love with Louis Killington. Insanely jealous of him, Louis was finally caught in the arms of another woman. She insisted that he marry her, claiming she was carrying his child. He refused and used the excuse that he had no funds or station to marry her.

When she got her father to offer a good dowry, Louis rejected her. Her father, angry at his daughter's infidelity, quickly married her to a Knight (Sir Percival Matterby) who was fat and old, but without an heir. This made Amelia hate Louis even more and she plotted her revenge. In defense Louis spread nasty rumours around court about her.

When Louis married, however, she showed up in the chapel where the banns were read, claiming she was secretly married to him and her child was his. Shortly afterwards she was committed to Bedlam.
