Background

Like so much of this part of Europe, this region too suffered the destructions of the Thirty Years’ War. Textile, glass, coal and silver production, as well as trade, helped to bolster the economy. Unlike other parts of the Holy Roman Empire, in Saxony, Luteranism was the only legal religion. The Elector focused largely on matters of the arts, making Dresden the musical focal point of the Holy Roman Empire.
